In the early development, it was once abandoned because of its strong irritation and corrosiveness. With the deepening of research, it was found that the main component of CNSL is arbutus acid (about 90%), and it also contains 10% cardol and a small amount of polymer. In the industrial extraction process, the basal acid will be decarboxylated to produce cardanol. Its structure is a monophenol derivative with an unsaturated or saturated long carbon chain (-C15H25-31), including saturated, monoene, diene and Triene and other components (Figure 1). Cardanol has a very important development and application value in the fields of coatings, rubber and surfactants due to its rich resources and low prices. It is a promising green chemical raw material. Recent research has also shown that cashew nut shell oil has potential application prospects in the fields of medicine, biocomposites, and bacteriostasis. The processing and extraction reaction temperature of traditional cashew nutshell oil is relatively high, and the resulting refined cashew nutshell oil has high viscosity and dark color. The subsequent distillation and purification of high-purity cardanol has a high cost, so its application is limited.

Cashew nut shells processed by cashew nut shell machines generally contain between 25-33%. Cashew nut shells need to be sorted, crushed, and fried before entering the oil press. Friction powder based on cashew nut shell oil is used for disc brake pads and wheel hub linings. Friction powder (sometimes called friction soil) is used as a stabilizer of friction coefficient in brake products. These particles have the characteristics of rebound, so they can buffer the pressure on the interlayer or lining. At the same time they can decompose on the surface of the interlayer at elevated temperatures to control wear and provide protection against further temperature rise.
